A stately Grande dame in the city of Galle on Sri Lanka’s south coast, Amangalla has the period charm of a bygone era. Built in 1684, the historic edifice retains its heritage in every architectural and decorative detail. Polished teak floorboards date back to the building’s origins, and the interiors are decorated with antiques that span centuries. The windows look out over the 36-hectare hexagonal stone fort or the property’s mature gardens.

Galle Fort’s tumultuous history spams more than 400 years, the streets are lined with old houses, their verandas. Set within its ramparts Amangalla is an integral part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

ACCOMMODATION
Restored with care and brought to life by antique furnishings and decorations, the 30 Rooms and Suites are connected by a two-storey Garden House. Amangalla’s elegant Rooms and Signature Rooms are high-ceilinged with large windows and the original polished Burmese teak floorboards.

GARDEN HOUSE
Two storey house in leafy harden surrounds with and expansive balcony. One-bedroom Garden House offers a spacious living/dining room, as well as a wrap-around balcony overlooking an immaculate garden.

AMANGALLA SUITE
The spacious Amangalla Suite is ideal for families and friends travelling together. Amangalla Suites overlooking the garden and yoga pavilion.

CHAMBERS
Fort or garden views, three with balconies and one with twin porch. Six in the Church Street Wing overlooking the treetops towards the fort ramparts, and four in the Garden Wing with garden views.

BEDROOM
Overlooking the gardens or the Groote Kerk (Great Church), Bedrooms feature jack wood floors and unique colonial-style furnishings.

SUITE
Separate bedroom and living room with garden, rampart or harbour views. Suites overlook Amangalla’s lush garden or the fort ramparts and the harbour through the leaves of Para rubber trees.

DINING
Furnished with period chairs and tables, crisp white linen and antique silverware, the high-ceilinged Dining Room is an intimate setting for meals, which centre on local produce. The daily-changing dinner menu is based on the chef’s finds at the various markets in Galle, and guests can accompany him on his rounds before returning to the kitchen for a cooking lesson in Sri Lankan cuisine.

WELLNESS
Amangalla’s spa, The Baths, recaptures a bygone era of taking the waters as a restoration for body and mind. Five treatment rooms are home to a range of therapies, which can be personalised by the spa’s Ayurvedic doctor to include massages, anointments, reflexology and scrubs. The two hydrotherapy suites contain hot and cold plunge pools as well as steam rooms and saunas, complemented by the yoga pavilion, where the discipline is practised every morning.

POOL
The 21 metre swimming pool is centred within Amangalla’s mature gardens. Bordering the pool, the Pool Courtyard contains five shaded pavilions on one side and a number of sun loungers shaded by palm trees.
